Well you might as well get it while you're fighting Seath. if you don't like it, all you wasted was a bit of time, and possibly a couple of levels if you didn't already have 16 Strength. Offhanding the butterfly horn is really nice. It depends on whatever moveset you prefer. Damage wise MLGS is far superior though.

And it's not a zero-sum game. You CAN use both scaling weapons AND elemental weapons. Just use elemental weapons early on then switch to scaling weapons once your stats are high enough that it makes a difference. And the Moonlight Butterfly Horn is, to put it lightly, complete garbage. There is NO practical reason not to take the shield.
