I am most familiar with the Seacrest/30A area but have spent some time on beaches in Destin. As for water and beach, I think the two are quite similar. The Village of South Walton has a fabulous pool and a very easy walk to the beach. You would also be able to walk to quite a few restaurants and would be able to drive to many more within minutes.
