You could also just bandage them, but the bandage gets dirty immediately and takes a long time to heal because of infection. Although that's not necessarily a huge deal. You also need to remove glass first, if there's some stuck in there. Mortality means wether or not the infection is lethal or not. With mortality turned off you’ll get extremely sick and need to take time to properly rest and recover from it but it will not kill you on its own. wound infection occurs if you dont changr dirty bandages or if you are dirty or have dirty or bloody clothes on. it will say infected in your health panel. it does not mean you have zombie infection. it does not cause stress or sickness moodle to rise. howevet only stress will rise if you leave in unbandaged.

If you get queasy or sick within 48 hours of being bitten or scratched you are very likely infected. You can stave off the ifnection with drugs. But you will eventually succumb to the infection. Your wounds can get infected, but it means bacterial infection (which can end up as a fever and can be treated with disinfection and antibiotics) and not Knox Virus infection which ends up only with death.
