Our E-techs were pretty good except the cams we went through. The E9 was a friggen stump puller but wasn't so great on fuel.Thank you. On your question, to tell if the fuel pump is defective you will need to check for external leaks and monitor the pressure output of the pump. These pumps have an internal relief valve inside them that is non serviceable. The pressure will usually run below 25-30 psi when the pump is worn out.Make sure the parking brake is set on the truck and trailer. Make sure the PTO is off and high idle is off. Make sure no pedals are depressed and that the engine is up to operating temp. Then depress the switch on the dash. I did a compression test as mack recommends and I only had 375 lbs at 1000 rpm mack states it should be atleast 500. So I pulled the pistons out but no resistance when I pushed the rods and pistons out Liners were glazed up real bad the 6 injectors that were bad didn't help any. Piston are good, rings are weak on tension.

As Vmac3 mentioned, there are very specific sealing procedures when putting a head back on a MP engine. On the upper rear timing gear cover. The early ones were aluminum and were good. Just change the rubber gasket and all is good. The newer covers are plastic and junk. I replaced the whole cover every time because they warp and leak.
