Serpent's base damage is supposed to be 23 but it does a pretty large range. It appears that only swords have a supposed defense bonus, so it being a function of parry is very possible. The lava katana is nothing compared to the galaxy sword. And it makes the skull caverns way easier, meaning you can get even more prismatic shards which you can do tons with. I personally save mine so I can enchant my tools in the volcano forge but since you're only just getting your first I doubt that's a viable option.
