I think Spear I think is just a consistently really good weapon. Low stance has great mobility and flying monkey jump attack actually does solid damage and can really cause problems for human enemies. Mid stance had great pokes that only get better with the increased thrust range. High stance is the least good, but has nice vertical attacks.Those two weapons have great synergy (except possibly with scaling), since spear is long range heavy hits, and kusa is short range rapid hits.
