You have to do a set amount of damage after volatile is applied for it to detonate. Not sure of the number off the top of my head but pretty much have to kill them to proc it. 1.

A grapple melee will give unraveling rounds if you're using the fragment. I typically use a strand AR with demo to keep the loop going. it’s works almost identical to volatile rounds, it has had a few seasonal artifacts but the only way to proc is via a fragment, Void requiring a grenade while Strand requires a melee.
