The serpent part is definitly beatable with a normal melee weapon. Whenever the serpent goes for any bites you can get 1 or 2 hits in. Considering how predictable the serpent is after dying a few times to it, it is far from impossible to win with a normal weapon. The Rykard half on the other hand is just impossible without the Serpent Hunter.
