As an update to these very helpful answers, this answer was the winner— registration didn't matter (didn't end up registering at all, but wouldn't have mattered anyway) and we kept the bracelet loose by using a tiny rubber band (similar to the ones people have for braces) and using that to keep the bracelet taut while hiding the sliding clasp part a bit under the sleeve.

To activate is simple: log in to your Coachella account on the mobile app, enter your legal first and last name into the wristband activation tab, and lastly, enter the six character code located on the back plastic part of your wristband.
